USPS Proposes Another International Rate Increase
IPA and ISAL Rate Hike
The USPS has proposed substantial international rate increase on their wholesale international mail services to take effect on August 16, 2017. The increases would be as follows:
- Standard ISAL – Letters are to increase 25-30%, Flats and Packets are going up 6-10%
- First Class IPA – Letters are to increase by 6-10%, No word yet on IPA Flats or Packets
These new increases are in addition to the recently implemented January 2017 increase of 3.5%-5%. Also this mid-year rate change means three price increases in a 12-month period! We think this is a huge burden to customers using ISAL and IPA and harmful to future USPS revenues.
Preventing another International Rate Increase
To this end, we are sending a letter to Mr. Ronald A. Stroman, Deputy Postmaster General & Chief Government Relations Officer, United States Postal Service, 475 L’Enfant Plaza SW Washington, DC 20260-0050 to respectfully request that the USPS extend the current rates and discounts until January 2018.
There will no doubt be another increase January 2018. However, if the additional international rate increase goes into effect on August 16th as proposed, mailings scheduled for the final quarter of 2017 could be canceled and/or alternative solutions will be implemented. The net effect for the USPS will be lower volumes and higher costs.
